The contract with Airbus, valued at approximately $3.6 billion (excluding taxes), is for a fleet of nine aircraft. It includes the acquisition of four new Airbus A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport aircraft along with the conversion of five used A330-200 aircraft. These used aircraft were procured through separate procurement processes with significant cost savings and provide best value for Canadians.

At the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Summit, Prime Minister Trudeau announced that the Government of Canada has awarded a $450-million contract to Thales Canada Inc., in a joint venture with Thales Australia Limited, to provide in-service support for the CAF Minor Warships and Auxiliary Vessels (MWAV) fleet for 5 years, with options to extend the contract for up to 19 years. This contract will begin in July 2023.

At the Summit, NATO Allies committed to strengthening the Alliance's deterrence and defence capabilities and enhancing their assistance to Ukraine. $2.8 billion: That’s how much a successful Bombardier/General Dynamics Mission Systems Canada (GDMS-C) bid to build the Canadian Multi-Mission Aircraft (CMMA) would deliver to the Canadian Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This assertion is contained in a report by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) entitled “Economic Impact of a Canadian Multi-Mission Aircraft Solution Proposed by Bombardier”, which was commissioned by that company and released on July 10, 2023.

Canada will support, through the Strategic Innovation Fund, General Dynamics Mission Systems–Canada's Centre of Excellence for remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS), located in Sherbrooke, Quebec. With this $10 million investment, General Dynamics will undertake mission system integration, testing and demonstration on the LX300 helicopter, a disruptive Canadian-made RPAS produced by Quebec-based Laflamme Aero, and is expected to create over 100 well-paying jobs in Sherbrooke. Additionally, on July 7th Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions announced a $2.5 million investment, through the Aerospace Regional Recovery Initiative, for Laflamme Aero to produce the aforementioned LX300, the first Canadian-made RPAS in its class.

Ahead of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Leaders' Summit this week, the Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, announced that Canada is committing $2.6 billion in funding starting in 2023-24, to renew and expand Operation REASSURANCE for three years. This operation is Canada's contribution to the biggest reinforcement of the Alliance's collective defence in a generation, and Canada's largest overseas mission, with up to 2200 troops to be persistently deployed, more than double the current deployment.

Seaspan has begun construction on a new Land-Based Test Site (LBTS) at Vancouver Shipyards that will integrate and test vital ship communications, navigation, and other electronic equipment prior to being installed on vessels. This was the gist of the one-day hybrid conference ‘Canadian ASW in the Future Strategic Environment’ staged by the Canadian Global Affairs Institute (CGAI) on June 15, 2023. It was held in person at Ottawa’s Westin Hotel, and online as well.

It was announced during the meeting of NATO Defence Ministers that Canada intends to deploy a Canadian Army Tank Squadron of 15 Leopard 2 tanks to Latvia, along with supporting personnel and equipment. This deployment as part of Operation REASSURANCE is set to take place over the coming months, with the full arrival of the tanks, initial supporting personnel, and equipment expected by Fall 2023. The full complement of approximately 130 personnel should be in place by spring 2024.
