HISS taps Airdyne

Highland Integrated Surveillance Systems, Inc (HISS) has reached a Marketing Agreement with Airdyne Research and Development of Calgary which will permit them to pursue opportunities within the UAE and other Middle Eastern countries for C-130 Integrated Airborne Mission Systems based upon Airdyne’s SABIR (Special Airborne Mission Installation and Response) System.

Magellan wins $3.5 million US contract

Magellan Aerospace Corporation has also been awarded a contract by The Boeing Company, Integrated Defense Systems, Long Beach, California, to build spare engine shrouds for the U.S. Air Force fleet of B-1Bs. 

Aeronca, Inc., a subsidiary of Magellan Aerospace USA, Inc., will produce the light weight titanium honeycomb engine shroud panels that protect the aft fuselage of the airplane from heat generated by the engines. The contract includes tooling refurbishment or replacement and production hardware and is estimated to generate revenue of $3.5 million US Dollar.

Upcoming Workshop on Lethal/Non-lethal Weapons

The Soldier Systems Technology Roadmap (TRM) will hold a key technical workshop on products and technology options to satisfy the lethal and non-lethal weapons requirements for Canada’s Soldier of the Future.

A free and open event, participation from companies from all Canadian and International sectors, and individual researchers/experts (university/college, government and other research organizations) is encouraged and welcomed. The event will be held November 24-26, 2009 at Toronto’s Delta Chelsea Hotel (33 Gerrard Street West, Toronto, Ontario M5G 1Z4).

CV 90 From BAE Hagglunds

BAE Systems Global Combat Systems has a long heritage in the design, development and production of armoured fighting vehicles. One of these vehicles, the CV90 series of Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFVs), is poised to capitalise on that heritage with new potential orders that could easily double the number of CV90s currently in service. And Canada could be one of those interested parties with a program for a Close Combat Vehicle currently in the works.

With that in mind, CDR recently sent European Correspondent, Tim Mahon, to the company’s manufacturing plant in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden, to view the current generation of CV90s first hand. Here is our report.

Van Doos Take out Taliban

Drew Brown, a reporter with Stars & Stripes, the US Army newspaper, recently went on patrol with a group of soldiers from The Royal 22nd Regiment, as they engage enemy insurgents.  His article is reproduced here courtesy of Stars & Stripes, Middle East.

Drop in CAE's Quarterly Net Earnings

CAE Net earnings for the second quarter ended September 30, 2009 were $39.1 million ($0.15 per share), down 20% year over year from $49.0 million ($0.19 per share). Excluding a restructuring charge of $1.1 million recorded during the quarter, net earnings were $39.9 million ($0.16 per share).

While earnings from its civil aviation customers weighed on its results, the military segment showed an improvement over last year.  Revenue in the second quarter for the combined Military business was $197.8 million, and operating income was $34.0 million, resulting in an operating margin of 17.2%.

Revenue in the Simulation Products segment was $137.4 million, up 9% year over year mainly because of higher activity on various NH90 helicopter programs and the integration into their results of DSA., which they acquired in May 2009. The Training & Services was $60.4 million in the second quarter, up 3% year over year mainly because of more work on maintenance service contracts in Canada and Germany and increased NH90 helicopter training activity in Germany.

International Security Forum comes to Halifax

The German Marshall Fund of the United Sates (GMF) with the support of the Government of Canada, will host the inaugural Halifax International Security Forum, a first-of-its-kind international security conference in North America, attracting the foremost security policymakers, opinion leaders, and analysts from North America, Europe, and Asia for serious, in-depth intellectual exchange on security and defense challenges.

Over two days, global leaders in politics, government, business, academia, and media will participate in an interactive, informal setting for in-depth debate and intellectual exchange on pressing strategic issues. The conference will take place at the Westin Nova Scotian in Halifax, Canada, from Friday, November 20, to Sunday, November 22.

DRDC Contracts Metal Storm Inc. for Launchers

COM DEV Signs Agreement for Space-Based AIS Data

exactEarth Ltd., a subsidiary of COM DEV International Ltd., has signed a long-term agreement with a non-government entity to provide its exactAIS(TM) service. Under this agreement, exactEarth will provide selected S-AIS (space-based Automatic Identification System) data beginning with the launch of exactEarth's satellites, planned for mid-2010.

Under the seven-year agreement, exactEarth's revenues could exceed an aggregate of US$37 million. Revenues from this contract are anticipated to be small in the first two years of service as new capabilities are delivered, but are expected to escalate thereafter.
