BMT Fleet Technology to support A/OPS project for Navy

BMT Fleet Technology Limited has been awarded the Definition, Engineering, Logistics and Management Support (DELMS) contract for the Canadian Arctic Offshore Patrol Ship (AOPS) project. The Canadian navy will acquire between six and eight ice-capable patrol ships to assert and enforce sovereignty in Canada’s waters, including the Arctic. The ships will be gun-armed, have sophisticated surveillance and communications equipment and may carry a helicopter. AOPS will be able to operate in medium first year ice and sustain operations for up to four months.

Cancellation of MHP a possibility

High-ranking government sources have indicated that the contract dispute between DND and Sikorsky Inc., the US based helicopter maker, are causing concerns at the highest levels of the government and that cancellation of the contract is a possibility. Additionally, indications are that the Cyclones need a more powerful engine to meet Canada’s requirements.

Lieutenant General Angus Watt, Chief of the Air Staff at NDHQ in Ottawa, assumed command as CAS in the latter half of 2007 and CDR recently sent Senior Writer and aviation specialist, Joetey Attariwala, to interview him about the current state of Canada’s Air Force. In Part One of a wide ranging interview Watt comments on the C-17 and C-130J acquisitions, special mods for the new Chinook helicopters, delays in delivery of the Cyclone helicopter for MHP, requirements for SAR aircraft and more. ATK’s Acquisition of MDA quashed

Alliant Techsystems Inc. (ATK) of Minneapolis received official word on Friday, May 9, 2008 from the Canadian Government of its decision to block the $1.3-billion sale of MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates' space-technology division. Speaking at the Canadian Space Agency headquarters in Montreal, Federal Industry Minister Jim Prentice made the announcement following what he called an "extensive and rigorous review process" of the proposed sale to Alliant.
